A stone can only be thrown once.

Collecting rocks is a near universal fascination, from children in school yards to ancient scholars, humans are drawn to their minute natural beauty.

A stone can only be thrown once is an ongoing series that reimagines Gongshi within the context of rocks found during the every day. Where traditional stones are sought from mountains and rivers, these rocks are found on the street or in gardens, displaced from where they were formed either artifically or by nature.

Each stone can be traced back to specific places, times and memories, representing the personal over the sublime.

The title of the work comes from the personal revelation that any time someone picks up a stone they have found, it is statistally likely to be the only time that stone will ever be touched by a human in all of history. It also plays on the symbolic act of throwing stones as a leisurely, almost child like activity, while also representing an act of social rebellion and political revolution.
