Along the way: Flora of Familiar Journeys

Rockdale Train Station is more than a transit point; it connects our local community to Sydney’s wider ecological network and offers commuters a lens to view our city’s diverse plant life. This is revealed when travelling on the train network, glimpsing plants and trees from the carriage window.

Along the streets of Rockdale grows a wide variety of native and introduced plant species, both curated and sprawling. From front yards to local parks, this plant life thrives alongside our local residents, living through adversity and a changing ecosystem.

This new public artwork by artistic duo Dylan Batty and Louise Zhang is inspired by their daily commute to and from Rockdale Train Station. These intricate illustrations of local plant species become dream-like compositions where flora floats against vibrant backgrounds and where glimpses of plants offer a moment of respite and quiet meditation. The windows present the natural beauty of Rockdale while highlighting the rich biodiversity that live in Rockdale’s urban environment.

“Every day we get to pass by trees and plants that we have grown up alongside and we get to see them change season by season, day by day. Those trees and plants help define the character of our landscape and by extension, the character of our community.” – Dylan Batty & Louise Zhang
